"The situation with the study of the phenomenon of UFOs in Russia is sad"

July 2, in all celebrate the Day of the ufologist, a holiday dedicated to those who study abnormal phenomena and UFOs. The choice of the date of the holiday is due to the fact that on that day in 1947 there was a so-called "rozuel incident" - near the American town Roswell in New Mexico, a certain lethal apparatus was destroyed, which many consider a "flying saucer" with humanoids on board.

On a professional holiday, Metro congratulated the head of the urological commission of the Russian Geographical Society, Mikhail Gerstein , who spoke about the current state of affairs in Russian ufology.

- Mikhail Borisovich, how do you assess the current situation of ufology in our country?

- The situation with ufology in is bad - stagnation, nothing is being done. Across the country, about twenty people are seriously engaged in this, about five in St. Petersburg.

- What do you need to seriously do this?

- In order to seriously engage in ufology, you need to have at least ten years of experience, a serious approach and at least one education in the field of physics, biology or other related sciences. There are, for example, astronomers who combine ufology with their main work.

- Can an amateur become a serious expert in this field?

- Time will show it - you need to get experience, the ability to apply your education in this area and not suffer from excessive fanaticism. We all started out as lovers.

- What, in your opinion, can improve the current sad situation with the study of UFOs?

-In the first place, you need to stop taking this problem seriously, including our military, who are not very interested in what is flying over them. Also, it would be worthwhile to introduce the subject of ufology, at least as an elective.Such experiments took place, but as a result, everything failed, because funding is needed. Now there are a number of projects, including international ones, which do not require fundamental research and, accordingly, serious financing, only enthusiasm is needed. So, there is much to develop.

- Do you often receive reports of observations of abnormal phenomena?

- The last time there were not a lot of messages, and the fact that it was - was explained, as a rule, by natural phenomena. The problem is also that we do not have a service that accepts messages about UFO sightings - people, money, people need a separate phone number, or a centralized resource on the Internet. In social networks now it is difficult to do it - because of the abundance of non-serious groups with several thousand subscribers, people simply can not find an official service.

The scientific community has not yet recognized Ufology as a science. The range of specialists interested in anomalous phenomena and UFOs is very wide, and the nature of this interest is heterogeneous - from serious scientific research to superficial amateur interest, and sometimes quackery.

At the same time in many countries of the world there are scientific organizations engaged in studying the phenomenon of UFOs, where authoritative scientists work. Conventionally ufologists are also divided into two camps: those who seek evidence of extraterrestrial presence on our planet, and those who try to explain this phenomenon by widening the boundaries of modern science.
